aesthetics that pervaded Roman culture as a whole. By the same token, however, the works were not created in a vacuum; they were commissioned after a fashion by the Augustan
regime, and as such the stories work both as a standalone narrative and as something of an allegory for the founding of Rome, and by extension, the veneration of Roman
and Christian ideals. Therefore, many of the themes and motifs which are present in the work can be read in the light of the commentary they seem to be making
upon contemporary Roman culture. This is most evident in the sixth book of the long poem, which describes the hero Aeneas journey into the underworld. This paper will explore how
Aeneas journey uses symbolism and simile to promote an ideal of justice that is in accordance with Roman and Christian standards. This paragraph helps the student begin to explore
the stops along Aeneas journey. The beginning of Aeneas journey into the underworld technically begins with the end of the fifth book, wherein Aeneas and his men, looking to settle
in Italy, decide that they must first seek the advice of Aeneas father, Anchises, who resides in the underworld. As such, the men prepare for the journey, but are instantly
faced with a critical setback: Aeneas primary fleet captain Palinurus is lulled into a sleep at the wheel of the ship and is hurled overboard to drown in the sea.
This establishes the theme of death and sacrifice that will be explored in depth in the macabre sixth book (Johnson 2004). Eventually, despite these bad omens, Aeneas ship manages
