different Shakespearean works, the comedy Measure for Measure and the tragic King Lear both have a common thread running through them. Both are plays that consider the fairness of
punishments initiated by a fallible magistrate, and engaged contradictions between justice as an ideal and as a set of issues enforced by a legal code. A student who is
writing about this topic should also consider whether or not the fact that one play is a comedy and one is a tragedy affects the nature of the critique, and
the ways in which the Bards approach to the theme of justice shaped and distinguished each play. Measure for Measure specifically considered the notion of just punishment under the law,
and featured as its chief protagonist, a fallible magistrate named Vincentio, who serves a Duke of Vienna. When unmarried men and women begin openly living together under his
rule, Vincentio decides to leave for a temporary respite in Poland, entrusting authority to whom he believes to be an incorruptible deputy, Angelo. However, in his efforts to restore
law and order, Angelo resurrects an old law that punishes any man who lives with a woman who is not his wife by beheading. However, men who lived with
women "in sin" prior to the reenactment of the law are not punished. Unfortunately, Claudio, who began living with Juliet after the law took effect and impregnated his lover,
