is one of the most widely read and widely analyzed tales from Chaucers work and as such stands as a classic in literature. The following paper argues that justice was
done in The Wife of Baths Tale. Justice and the Wife of Bath The Wife of Baths Tale, as noted, is a tale about what women want. In
this story a knight is found guilty of raping a maiden. King Arthur sentenced him to death for "By course of law" he "should have lost his head" (Chaucer). However,
surprisingly enough, the women of the court and the Queen begged that his life be saved so the King gave him over to his Queen. The Queen tells him "Ill
grant you life if you can tell to me What thing it is that women most desire" (Chaucer). In this many may
argue that because he was not put to death justice was not done. He was guilty of raping a virgin woman, despite her protestations, and yet he was allowed to
live. But, from a more noble and enlightened perspective it can be argued that if he was put to death a lesson would not be learned. And, being that he
was a knight, he was essentially required to meet challenges and learn how to be chivalrous, often through mistakes. As such the Queen feels she is giving out a more
powerfully enlightening sense of justice by insisting he discover what women really want. The knight makes his journey and ultimately finds an
old witch, "A fouler person could no man devise" (Chaucer). She tells him she will give him the answer in exchange for his return and his hand in marriage. The
