summarizes the theory and then presents an argument for Just War. The paper then provides a brief counterargument. Just War Theory: Summary It appears that most people link the
origins of the Just War Theory back to St. Augustine. St. Augustine did not feel that people had the right to kill someone else out of self defense or protection
of property, but that a nations leader or leaders did have the right to protect their people in such a way (Raymond, 2005). "For St. Augustine the only reason for
waging a war would be to defend the nations peace against serious injury" (Raymond, 2005). It was not until the 16th and the 17th centuries that the theory was
fully developed into a theory which focused also on the proper way in which to start a war (Raymond, 2005). Hostilities are divided into two classes: an armed attack against
a peaceful society and injurious actions taken against the same (generally defined as an infringement of a right). In the theory there are two classes, the first being anything considered
to be an an armed attack that is being directed at a peaceful society (Raymond, 2005). The second type is the development of any injurious attacks against a peaceful society,
a perspective that addresses the infringement of a peaceful societys rights (Raymond, 2005). The counterattack could take an offensive position, such as is the case with injurious attacks, or
