that trials shall be held in the State wherein the crimes were committed ("Clause 3"). According to the Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago (CRFC), the majority of jury trials pertain to
criminal cases, although jury trials also occur in civil cases when individuals feels that a jury trial is in their best interests. The first step in a trial by
jury is the selection of twelve laymen to serve as jurors. A potential candidate pool is selected by summoning randomly selected voters to jury duty. During jury selection, the voir
dire oath is administered, in which the potential juror pledges to tell the truth, and each counsel questions prospective candidates to discern possible prejudices or biases that could influence the
individual as a juror. In other words, counsels endeavor to discern the potential of that individual to be fair and unbiased in deciding the defendants case (Connecticut Courts). If counsel
has doubts about the appropriateness of a potential juror, a challenge will be issued, either for cause or peremptory (without cause) (Connecticut Courts). When potential jurors are challenged, the Court
excuses them from participation in that particular case. The number of peremptory challenges that can be issued by counsel is limited, but both prosecution and defense are allowed an unlimited
number of challenges for cause ("Steps"). The number of juror selected varies according to the type of case. For civil cases and the majority of most criminal trials, 6
jurors are selected, along with 2 alternates, who remain in the courtroom and hear all evidence so that they are prepared to take the place of a juror if this
