the article introduction did begin with an anecdote from the O.J. Simpson trial. However, Norman went on to tell of a personal experience as a juror and brought up how
jurors are treated, which was not very well, and actually condoned nullification by the time the article concluded. In fact, the article was about his day in court, as a
juror, exercising his power. The justification given for ignoring the judges instructions was due to the fact that they all had their own recent experience with the judicial system which
was their experience as jurors (Norman, 1998). He added " If this was the way they ran things, my side argued, then we needed more vigilantes" (1998, p. PG).
The article ended with the following statement " Like the O.J. jury we had returned a flawed verdict, based largely on our resentments.
We were, I fear, increasingly typical" (p. PG). The story was not one where the verdict was simply given because the jurors were
dissatisfied with the system. They did listen to the evidence where some boys stole empty bottles they planned to turn in for redemption. The jurors thought the case was ridiculous;
they had heard much worse and thought the boys should be allowed to go. They believed they were doing the right thing but of course, they were not following the
law. Jury nullification is a serious problem. Norman proudly tells his tale of how the justice system is unfair and how one jury had given a verdict contrary to their
instructions but what they felt was right. The old question of whether or not the ends justifies the means comes to mind as even though perhaps the boys were not
