authors intent was to urge people to see the evils of capitalism and to direct them to the promises of socialism. It does in many ways, not the least of
which is the presentation of the life and struggles of Jurgis, his main character. Putting aside the socialist intent in the novel the following paper examines Jurgis assimilation, and his
inability to assimilate, into American society. Jurgis Assimilation in Sinclairs The Jungle Jurgis, like many people in the book, is a
recent immigrant to the United States. In the beginning of the novel the reader is introduced to him, and his wife, as they experience their wedding. Jurgis comes from Lithuania
and is excited about the possibilities that await him in this new land. He believes that if he works hard things will work out. This is evidenced in the beginning
when he and his wife discover the cost of the wedding and the cost of living. He tells her, "Little one...do not worry...I will work harder." That was always what
Jurgis said" (Sinclair Chapter 1). In the beginning of the book Jurgis is still young and he is still hopeful that the
United States will prove to be a land of great opportunity. He believes that through hard work he will assimilate and find success. The other men, ones who had been
there longer and were older, would tell him things, "stories about the breaking down of men, there in the stockyards of Chicago, and of what had happened to them afterward--stories
to make your flesh creep, but Jurgis would only laugh" for he believed he could work hard and ultimately assimilate into success (Sinclair Chapter 2).
