If obesity in childhood develops, the child has a much high risk for being obese as an adult. Among the causes of childhood obesity are societal factors that include schoolchildrens food choices, such as the expectation of large food portions and the presence of junk food vending machines in the public schools. Dietary factors have been identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as contributing to the increased caloric intake that results in obesity and among these factors is "larger portion size," as well as increased consumption of refined carbohydrates (Hensrud and Klein, 2006, p. S5). The CDC figures indicate that American men have increased their food intake by 168 calories since the 1970s and womens intake has increased by 335 calories (Hensrud and Klein, 2006). Sugar-sweetened beverages have been shown to be a primary contributor to weight gain, as this item constitutes "11 percent of childrens total calorie consumption" (Frieden, Dietz and Collins, 2010, p. 357). A single serving of soda, consumed daily, increases a childs risk for becoming obese by 60 percent (Frieden, Dietz and Collins, 2010). Frieden, Dietz and Collins (2010) point out that policy interventions promote encouraging children to make healthy food choices are more likely to promote benefit with this problem. The CDC conducts a survey every six years that investigates the content of public school nutritional programs (OToole, et al, 2007).
