generations of women in relation to the political changes of their eras. This is a true story of how these women fought and struggled for leaders they believed in
only to find themselves eventually disillusioned by these same leaders and ideologies. In this way, their struggles very much mirror the evolution of China itself and the progression of
political ideals in the 20th century. Beginning with Changs grandmother, it is evident just how far political practices have come. Her
grandmother served as a concubine for a warlord which was both a physical and emotional struggle in many regards, although in others it was as if she were supporting the
cause by giving of herself in this way. Then, Changs mother served the communist party with fervor which was during the early days of Maos revolution. Then, Chang
herself came to support Mao with great intensity as she marched for him and worked in a number of different capacities for the leader in which she believed. However,
as time went on Chang came to doubt Mao and the excesses of his regime. As Chang came to witness the viciousness of Mao as his power increased, she
became very disenchanted with what she saw. His policies stifled an entire nation, and Changs family was no different. Chang witnessed the oppression of her own parents as
a result of Mao and the purges he designed for his own glorification and greed. One of the things that it
so interesting and compelling about this book is its perspective. Essentially, this book outlines the rise and fall of Chairman Mao through the experiences of three generations of women.
