Born Gaius Octavius Thurinus, Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus served as the first emperor of
the Roman Empire. He was the sole ruler of the Empire between 27 B.C and 14 A.D. Prior to that time Caesar (then known as Octavius) had been
one of three leaders comprising the Second Roman Triumvirate. The Second Triumvirate was a military dictatorship but there was discord between Caesar and is co-leaders. After Lepidus went
into exile and Antony killed himself, Caesar became the sole leader. This transition from the triumvirate to the sole leadership was a key factor in the stabilization of the
Empire. Caesar took many other key steps as well that were critical in this stabilization. In the beginning of his sole rule
Caesar simply reestablished the primary features of the Roman Republic. Although he restored visible power to the Senate, however, in actuality Augustus Caesar retained the real control. Never-the-less,
Augustus Caesar slowly transitioned the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire, an Empire where peace became the objective. Some warfare continued, of course, but for the most part the
