for - March, 2000 paper properly! Jean Craighead Georges novel, Julie of the Wolves,
is a story with several themes, one of them being an initiation tale. Certainly, the protagonist, a thirteen year old girl, is plunged into womanhood just as any girl would
be. However, rites of passage take on a deeper meaning in this story which include a great deal of cultural peculiarities. However, the story is also about hope and strength
as exhibited by a courageous young woman. Finally, this book addresses survival issues, something that many people face at one time or another, in their own lives. Julies growth into
womanhood is somewhat painful, but in some way it is a celebration of her strength and courage. Julie is really Miyax, an Eskimo girl and married already. Thus, one can
see that the custom is rather different than for the typical girl. Miyax was thrust into womanhood and marriage, the latter not of her own choosing. Her rite of passage
was not a birthday party, or a Bas Mitzvah, or a trip to the beauty salon. Miyax had a husband. She had lost here innocence already. But Miyax, despite her
cultural heritage decides to leave. That in and of itself is rather brave. Thus, one sees a very painful growth into womanhood as Miyax has to face the challenges of
married life. That, even for someone in their twenties or thirties, is challenging. Yet, Miyax is only thirteen when she runs away from her life. But this running away, while
seemingly cowardly to some, is an exemplification of true bravery. What prompts the escape is that Miyaxs husband tries to consummate the marriage. This scenario brings up many questions. In
