his fantasies focused on "Julias Petticoat" far more than he would enjoy a conversation with the person wearing the petticoat. Herricks persona has caught a glimpse of Julias petticoat, and that glimpse enables his imagination to pursue several possibilities. Whether Herricks persona truly sees as much petticoat as his imagination would lead him to believe is not stated, but it appears that the first glimpse is the only one enabled through physical sight. Others seem to be more fanciful in their origin. The Poem If marked by periods, then "Julias Petticoat" consists of four sentences. One long sentence (eight lines) is followed by one very short one with only two lines. The third is another eight-line sentence; the final one is four. In the first sentence, Herricks persona catches a glimpse of Julias "airy" blue petticoat, perhaps as Julia is walking, kicking up the hem of her full-length dress with each step. If this is the case, then Julia is walking at a brisk pace, perhaps on a day on which a breeze assists Herricks persona both in reality and in imagination. Julias petticoat is "erring here, and wandring there, pleasd with transgression evrywhere." This is hardly the action a petticoat could manage were Julia demurely seated at a table with her needlework. The petticoat "Sometimes twould pant, and sigh, and heave," which again suggests action that is being repeated and which allows the petticoat to become visible momentarily on several occasions. On the other hand, the words also could be describing the actions of Herricks personas heart - or more accurately his breath - at each glimpse of Julias ...
