Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 5 page research paper that examines Julian Barnes' novel Flaubert's Parrot. Towards the end of this work, the protagonist, Dr. Geoffrey Braithwaite concedes that he has failed in his purpose to write an account that would make sense out of his life. Despite his ramblings and investigations throughout the narrative, Braithwaite closes his observations without stating anything unequivocally concerning his own life, his late wife, or his investigations into the life of the famous author Gustave Flaubert. While this suggests that the novel concludes with issues unresolved, an examination of the structure of this work reveals how the reader perceives a story that is different from the one that Braithwaite believes he is telling. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

regards to Flaubert, this work is one of "creative scholarship" (Flauberts Parrot NA). As Braithwaite reviews Flauberts life and analyzes his works, he provides the reader with a varied and
also endearing perspective on this renown novelist. However the focus on Flaubert is just one of the various concerns in this complicated text. Ultimately, Flauberts Parrot is more
concerned with Braithwaite than Flaubert. As the narrative unfolds, Braithwaite shares with the reader his convictions on everything from fiction to his late wife, who is also one of Braithwaites
obsessions. The detective story concerning the stuffed parrots becomes a sideline to exploring the extent of Braithwaites erratic but brilliant mind (Flauberts Parrot NA). In so doing, Barnes puts Flauberts
Parrot within the lexicon of postmodern explorations of textuality and history (Brooks 45). Braithwaites story (as opposed to his investigations into Flauberts life and work) concerns an upper-class English gentlemans
