extraordinary degree, celebrity and beauty would almost certain be sufficient to promote an acting career, but in addition to these features, Julia Roberts can also act. Examination of several of
her films shows that Roberts is high skilled at her craft. One of her most famous roles is that of Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman (1990, directed by Garry
Marshall). Roberts portrayal of vivacious and appealing prostitute won her an Oscar nomination (Moss 22). The story is basically a modern day fairy tale. Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) is a
jaded corporate mogul who gets no pleasure from his work, his money or his life. Having learned that his live-in mistress is leaving him, he is driving aimlessly around
Los Angeles when he spots Vivian and asks her for directions (Moss 22). Rather than respond, she gets into the car and shows him how to get back to his
hotel. Intrigued by vitality and child-like innocence (as he his fully aware she is a prostitute), he asks her up to his room. Despite her profession, Vivian embodies a "quality
of innocence" and a "kid of naivete" that attracts the world-weary businessman (Moss 22). Exposure to Vivians zest for life provides a striking contrast for Lewis that illustrates the emptiness
of his life. He realizes that he has been living in an emotional vacuum, operating more as a robot than a human being, and he subsequently offers Vivian a job--to
be his companion for a week. While their relationship is, presumably, strictly business, the audience knows that this is the beginning of a love story. The plot for Pretty
Woman is rather transparent. Vivian is Cinderella, waiting to be transformed, which quickly occurs when Lewis gives her money to buy clothes suitable to her new position. As this suggests,
