de Agua in the 1930s. Though their lives certainly did not remain idyllic, it was nonetheless a good beginning. Enrique Mirabal lived life as an attentive father who
knew every movement each of his daughters made, and most likely offered opinion, also. Patria was the oldest and most devout; it was
her dream to attend Inmaculada Concepci?n School. Those were different days and in another time: the girls mother had never had the opportunity for attending school and was
shamed by her own illiteracy. She stated the case for the education of the other two older daughters too. At school, Minervas
rebellious nature begins to awaken, though at first it was confined to activities such as attempting to "liberate" a rabbit from its pen. Leader Trujillo is represented as a
great leader, though it is known that he does appreciate young girls. He appreciates them so much, in fact, that he keeps several houses for them throughout the town.
Those in the convent school he removes from school so that they-and he-can have more freedom than is afforded by the convent walls.
Minerva and nearly every other school child and household in the country are taught to revere Trujillo. Even with his well-known bent for young girls, he is respected
throughout the country and represents himself as a benevolent leader. Minerva first hears of his true nature through a school friend, and patriotic Minerva refuses to believe the horror
stories she hears until Trujillos men murder the brother of that school friend. The evidence is irrefutable, and Minervas rebelliousness finds its channel of political awakening.
