century author Jules Verne (1828-1905) helped to create the foundation of the modern science fiction genre. The fertile imagination saw in the elements of technological advancement that characterized the dawn
of the Industrial Age as creating the background for extraordinary adventure. In his writing, he focused on his vision of combining "scientific fact with adventure fiction" ("Jules Verne). Verne was
41 years of age when he wrote Around the World in Eighty Days, which was published in 1873, and he was already familiar with notoriety, due to the success of
his previous novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (Tournier 106). Both of these novels were written during the early part of Vernes career, which is when Verne regarded technology
and science in a positive light. After 1886 and continuing until his death in 1905, Verne took a much more negative view of science, as he explored the dangers inherent
in technology ("Jules Verne"). The following examination of Around the World will offer a summation that shows how Verne used the narrative convention of plot development to convey that Phileas
Fogg, a studious, sheltered scholar, was unprepared for the realities of inclement weather, boat and train schedules and the plethora of real-world details that could interfere with his scientific deductions
