The sweetheart of stage and screen lived a tumultuous life filled with unrelenting pressures as a child of "a pushy stage mother" (Erickson, 2005) while trying to make the day-to-day realities of an unforgiving career a little easier to take by numbing her pain, an anguish she experienced throughout her entire – albeit short – life. life. The extent to which depression in women has myriad causes and theories speaks to the vastness of such a debilitating mental disease.
Chemical imbalance, eating disorders, stress, emotional trauma and a whole host of other potential causes - some genetic, others environmental and still others gender-related - have made women "twice
as likely as men to develop depression" (Anonymous, 2003, p. 7). Psychological stress is linked with just about every aspect of life; people
are ill-equipped to deal with the daily demands that have escalated over the past century. The body is quick to negatively manifest the overwhelming pressures of life in the
form of disease - which is "essentially a reaction between individuals and the stresses and adverse factors of their physical, biological and social milieu, and how we respond is governed
by genetic make-up" (Dobson, 1997, pp. 44-45). Garlands early indoctrination to the movie industry by a mother who kept a tight leash on her daughters set a detrimental precedence
for young Garland to adapt to while at the same time preserve her sanity. Soon the movie studio became Garlands personal drug supplier in an attempt to maintain the
