Christianity and Islam developed from Judaism, which originated among a tribal people in Palestine. Jews believe that God (Yahweh) made a special covenant with Abraham, the ancestor of the Jewish
people, that he and his descendants would be blessed if they worshiped God and followed divine teaching. The first five books of the Hebrew Bible are known as the Torah
and are considered to be the most important of all Jewish scriptures (Raphael, 1984). The Torah enumerates the laws of Judaism and describes Jewish history until the death of Moses
in the 1200s BC. The Hebrew Bible (the Christian Old Testament) also contains additional books of Jewish history and moral teaching. Judaism has three major branches: orthodox, reform and conservative
Judaism. Orthodox Judaism accepts the entirety of traditional Jewish belief and its way of life (Ahavat Israel, 1995). Orthodox Jews believe that the laws of the Torah were revealed to
Moses by God on Mount Sinai, precisely as the Torah records. They follows all of the strict Jewish dietary rules, observe all Jewish laws as laid out in the Torah
and Talmud, and pray three times daily (Raphael, 1984). Reform Judaism began in the early nineteenth century when many Jews began to question the traditional teachings (Raphael, 1984).Reform Jews
believe that the Bible reflects the primitive concepts of the age in which it was written (Ahavat Israel, 1995). Reform Judaism no longer looks on Jews collectively as a nation,
but rather as a religious community (Ahavat Israel, 1995). The emphasis in reform Judaism is on the moral and ethical teachings of the Hebrew Bible. Conservative Judaism is located
