Introduction You wouldnt thing that a guy on a horse would cause much trouble in the Southwest. That is not the case concerning a larger than life-size statue
of the Spanish conquistador Juan de Onate at a small museum in Alcade, New Mexico. The Work Compositionally the work is not elaborate, the larger than life statue of
Onate is a man in armor, staff of the flag clutched in one hand, horses reins in another. It reminds you of almost any war statue that you would
find commemorating a local battle about the time of the Civil War. The figure does not look down, but rather gazes intently into space with the almost stereotypical look
of the explorer. The setting for the piece is a small museum about an hour north by car of the capital Santa Fe. The museum was constructed to
honor the Spanish heritage and historical contributions in the area. History Involved Sounds innocent enough doesnt it, yet according to Rebecca Rolwing (1998) the story does not stop there.
Onate was accompanied by a garrison of troupes including, at a lesser rank, his own nephew. They arrived at the Acoma pueblo in 1598 with the King of Spains
directive to convert the heathen and find "treasure;" perhaps the Kings instructions were not in that particular order. Consequently, Onate set about his task: but things do not
go well for this man who would much rather be on the trail than administrating "details." In the process his nephew is killed in a skirmish - one story
