one belongs in their own particular world. It is clearly a story that takes the tale of Anton Chekhov, "The Lady with the Dog," and alters it to present the
reader with a womans perspective, a female character rather than male, in a similar situation. The following paper analyzes this short story by Oates. The Lady with the
Pet Dog In this story we have a woman who meets a man on the beach and he sketches many pictures of her. He tells her to keep the one
she likes the best and that one is of her with the dog in her lap, thus the title of the story. As time goes on they see each other
while she is there on vacation. She leaves for home, in Ohio, and he comes to see her there. She is distraught and knows what they are doing is wrong
because they are both married. She seems to constantly ask him if he loves her and we never hear him say he does. She is lost and confused and as
the story comes to an end she has decided that after this last visit she will go home and slit her wrists. But she suddenly sees him in the mirror
and inwardly becomes free, realizing that what they have done is not wrong, but natural, and that she is truly, in her heart and soul, married to him and he
to her. The main character is Anna and Anna is seemingly lost in a world of confusion and madness in much of the story. She is not a woman
who seems to have many strong characteristics, but she is a woman at a clear crossroads in her life, realizing that something in her is changing forever. She is not
