is compelled to examine the difference between his own idealized conception of romance and the female sex and what he comes to learn is the ordinary reality of his relationship
to the much-idealized girl, Mangans sister. As this suggests, this story if also very much about gender, and the socialized expectation that affect interpersonal relationships, which cause individuals to view
one another through the prism provided by societal paradigms rather than as they actually are in reality. Throughout this story, Joyce adheres strictly to first-person perspective for his point
of view. Therefore, the reader never learns the name of the protagonist. After all, individuals do not generally think in terms of their own name-- they know who they
are. The protagonist is simply the "I" of his thoughts, to which Joyce gives the reader access. Similarly, the girl who is the focus of the boys attention
is never named. She is simply Managans sister. It is as if the boy feels that her name is too holy to bandy about carelessly. Also, by defining the
girl according to her relationship to a male, Joyce subtly points to the gender hierarchy that was prevalent throughout the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. Because the details
of the boys life are not filled in , the reader is left to surmise the basic facts from what he says. For example, the boy mentions playing with his
friends on the streets of Dubln. This gives the reader two vital pieces of information. First of all, the boy is still young enough to enjoy such play, but he
