favourite of Heaven, and acknowledge the mercies of Providence in every occurence of my life" (Equiano PG). Words such as these speak of a strong spiritual faith, one that has
been tested and that has proven triumphant over the many obstacles and oppressions that life tends to throw between man and his beliefs. Every faith or religion incorporates a
basic belief that individual faith is tested throughout ones lifetime, and that grace is achieved by ones reactions to these tests as well as ones ability to hold onto faith
throughout the duration. To acknowledge Providence in both the good and the bad experiences encountered throughout a lifetime exhibits a deeply seated personal belief and is a desirable trait
in most religions. To consider ones self favored by Providence under even the most cruel and inhumane conditions, as did the author of these words, exhibits a profound belief
that is rare among members of any faith. This author, named Olaudah Equiano at birth but later renamed Gustavus Vassa by the slaveowners that came to control his destiny,
possessed this rare type of faith. It was a faith resulting from a personal religion that fate had dictated that Equiano construct for himself, drawn from a handful of
