Katie Couric and others on the network morning show were calm in announcing that there was a breaking story that they were going to go to, that there was a
fire at the World Trade Center and it appeared to have been caused by an airplane crashing into the building. That portion of the country not watching live and
in horror as the second plane crashed into the second tower was afforded the opportunity to see it repeatedly throughout the remainder of September 11 and the next several days.
The US news media has been accused of being everything from relentless, unyielding and uncooperative to so liberally biased that they have affected
national elections. Much less has been said about US media bias in the wake of the September 11 attacks, the ongoing anthrax scare and the war in Afghanistan.
Three Events and Issues The World Trade Center As CBS News kept cameras trained on the
Twin Towers as one burned, reporters already had witnesses to the first plane attack on the phone and on the air. There was no indication at the time that
what had happened was any more than an accident, albeit a tragic one. One of those telephone interviewees exclaimed that another plane was heading for the towers as viewers
of the live video saw it come in heading for its target. The media has been accused of attracting to the sensational in
the past, but The Today Shows Matt Lauer had not seen the second plane and momentarily argued with the interviewee that no, that had not happened at all. On
