located in Erfurt, where he became a priest in 1507 ("Luther, Martin"). He later became a professor of religious studies at the University of Wittenberg, where his ability to teach
and sway people towards his ideas on theology became evident, as he was a popular professor ("Luther, Martin"). In 1517, Johann Tetzel, a Dominican monk came to Wittenberg for the
purpose of selling indulgences, which provided funds to the Church in Rome, which were being used to rebuild St. Peters Basilica. Indulgences supposedly offered a sinner the guaranteed promise, backed
by the Church, that God would forgive them ("Luther, Martin"). In protest of this practice, Luther composed 95 theses that criticized the Roman Catholic Church hierarchy for this practice
and nailed this document on the door of All Saints Church in Wittenberg. It was October 31, 1517, which is considered to be the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.
