Chapter 1: Plot: After a brief prologue that introduces the reader to Maya, aka Marguerite, the first chapter fills in the reader on her background, which is that when Maya was three years old, her parents divorced and sent her and her older brother Bailey, who was four, to live with their parental grandmother, whom they call "Momma," in Stamps, Arkansas. Character analysis: The prologue, as well as this chapter, establishes the character of Maya, an insecure black child who perceives herself as large and ugly, and who fantasizes that the reason she does not fit in with her peers is that she is really white. Bailey is the antithesis of Maya, as he is extraverted, graceful and charming. Momma is defined by her staunch Christian values and her love for her grandchildren. Symbols, literary features: Momma runs the only store in the black section of Stamps, which is the center of black community life. Therefore, it acts as a symbol of Mommas position as a leader in that community. Also, the lavender taffeta dress that Maya describes in the prologue symbolizes her desire to transformation and insecurity, as she fantasizes that the beauty of the dress will make her beautiful as well. Significant lines: "I know that once put it on Id look like a movie star" (Angelou 3-4). Thematic content: Introduces the prevailing themes of the negative effects of parental rejection and displacement, as well as racism. ...
