and he establishes a stone marker to commemorate the rededication of the Hebrew people to their covenant with God. The following exegetical examination of this passage places it in historical
context and discusses its relevancy to present-day Christians. The Old Testament Book of Joshua recounts the story of the founder of Israel as a settled, theocratic state (Strange, 2002).
To determine the origin and date of this book requires that scholars examine the different sections of the book, as these parts have different purposes, goals, and origins (Strange, 2002).
Basically, the Book of Joshua divides into four parts: 1) the story of the conquest of Canaan (chs. 1-11); 2) a collection of lists describing the territories (chs. 12-21); 3)
stories about the arrangement concerning the tribes east of Jordan (ch. 22); and 4) the last will and testament of Joshua, the covenant in Shechem and the death and burial
of Joshua (chs. 23-24) (Strange, 2002). A really interesting element in chapter 24 is its setting, as the entirety of its story takes place in Shechem. Strange (2002) feels that
this feature suggests the possibility that this chapter was written after the Samaritan schism and is a Samaritan effort to make Shechem, with Garizim, the center of the Holy
