A thoroughly modern conception, the music video is a combinational aesthetic form which comprises two other modes within itself: the musical content, which is typically recorded separately and is intended to stand alone when necessary, and the video content which is generally not intended to stand on its own, but rather serve exclusively as an accompaniment to the musical content. In order to critique a music video then, one has to be aware of the musical content as the primary driver of information, while also assessing the influential role played by the visual components, and most importantly, how the synergistic interaction between the two, alters the contents message itself. In order to explore the particular challenges associated with the intelligible critique of a music video, a popular selection might be employed as a case study. For example, one might watch the video for Josh Gracins "The Other Little Soldier". This example is suitable because the video is nothing more than the most simplistic and puerile combination of music and visuals, achieving only the most basic and literal associations between the two, without striving for anything too abstract or relevant to human concepts of beauty and complexity. While the songs lyrics sing the tired tale of a soldiers child left an orphan after the glorious and honorable combat death of the father, the videos visuals portray a series of images of soldiers and their children, arranged in such a sequence that they repetitiously correspond to the literal lyrical pronouncements that they coincide with (Gracin, 2004).
