And yet, from the outset, this author establishes doubt in the mind of readers through the character of Inspector Alan Grant, who comes to investigate the King and believes his portrait reveals the face of a man incapable of such a crime. In the end, readers realize that it wasnt actually Richard III who executed this horrible crime, but rather it was Henry VII. Therefore, the element of mystery in this particular story allows not only for heightened drama in terms of figuring out who was actually the monster, but it also serves to implore readers to be far more critical and analytical in their judgments about these characters. It is important to recognize that mystery is a tool the author uses to heighten the drama of this story. She does this by surrounding these characters with a shroud of intrigue and suspicion. The character of Richard III is never really released from his alleged "guilt" until the very end of the story. Therefore, even though the author makes the case for his innocence, mystery is used to prevent readers from really knowing the "truth". Richard III is therefore a suspect throughout. In the end, what emerges is the realization that it was quite possibly Henry VII that used various tactics to blacken the name of his predecessor. Therefore, the reality of the mystery is that Henry VII was actually responsible for the allegations that have plagued Richard III for literally generations.
