poverty she experienced powerful racism, yet was adored in Paris. She struggled and succeeded and stands as one of the most powerful African American and performance icons in American history.
The following paper examines the life and works of Josephine Baker. Josephine Baker: Life and Works "Josephine Baker was born in a
poor, Black slum in East St. Louis, Illinois, on June 3, 1906, to 21-year-old Carrie MacDonald. Her mother hoped to be a music hall dancer; meanwhile, she was forced to
take in laundry" (Gale, 2007). She was actually descended from Black slaves from South Carolina as well as Apalachee Natives (Gale, 2007). Her father was "Olive-skinned Eddie Carson...a vaudeville drummer
and was not seen much by his daughter" (Gale, 2007). When Josephine was 8 she was hired out as a maid to a
white woman where she was made to sleep in a cellar with a dog (Gale, 2007). It is noted that when she used too much soap in the laundry her
hands were scalded (Gale, 2007). When she was 10 she went back to school (Gale, 2007). When she was 11 she was witness to the race riot in St. Louis
and at the age of 13 she moved away from St. Louis (Gale, 2007). This author notes how a biographer wrote: "That such a childhood produced an expatriate is not
