We will examine his "fiction" to attempt to see how stress affects this vital section of our workforce. Joseph Wambaugh The son of a Pittsburgh police officer, Joseph A. Wambaugh Jr. became one of Americas most famous cops and a best selling author who redefined police fiction. Before Wambaugh, cops were usually depicted as figures of irreproachable moral authority. But Wambaugh knew better--hed been with the LAPD for more than 10 years, starting as a patrolman, by the time he published his first novel, The New Centurions, in 1971. Wambaughs characters are human beings with frailties, fears, and foul mouths, sworn to protect a citizenry that didnt necessarily want them around. Bumper Morgan of The Blue Knight (1973), amasses a careers worth of petty bribes and flawed heroics. Wambaughs first nonfiction book, The Onion Field (1974), about two young cops fateful encounter with two young robbers, was a huge success. After Wambaugh left the LAPD in 1974, his work, beginning with The Choirboys (1996), became fiercely and darkly comic. In novels like Floaters (1997) and The Golden Orange (1991), he tells tales of tough-talking cops in glittering, corrupt Southern California.
