was a powerful leader, despite anyones opinion, and his life clearly made an incredibly impact on the Soviet Union/Russia. One of the most powerful and important times of his rule
occurred from 1945, when Germany offered surrender, and 1953, when Stalin died. The following paper examines this period of time discussing Stalin as well as Potsdam. Joseph Stalin
and Potsdam Towards the end of the war, when Germany had made the choice to surrender, there was still the obvious problem of Japan. In Stalins mind it seems that
he "was interested in completely destroying Japans military potential. But the demand for unconditional surrender was also a convenient way to prolong the war. In addition, Stalin raised the possibility
of discussing the zone of operations for the armies and zones of occupation in Japan" (Hasegawa, 2005; 84). These were issues that he felt would be of focus in Potsdam,
although he did not know that Truman had something of an ace up his sleeve in the form of the atomic bomb. But, it is important to note that this
was also an alliance, a conference that would hopefully bring the Soviet Union and the United States under one common roof. Hasegawa
(2005) also notes that one "important point has thus far been ignored by historians. It was Hopkins who suggested the idea of a joint U.S.-Soviet ultimatum to Japan. Stalin expected
this issue to be placed on the agenda of the forthcoming Potsdam Conference" (Hasegawa, 2005; 84). And, although the majority of Potsdam was focused on what to do following the
surrender, involving dispersion of countries, Japan was a serious concern. The Truman Library (2007) notes that, "Held in an unbombed suburb of Berlin" Potsdam "included hammering out the details regarding
