the many negativities of his rule, Joseph Stalin was almost solely responsible for the transformation of Russia from a backward unproductive country to the industrial power she is today.
He was able to do so because of his captivating personality and his strong leadership skills. At the same time, Stalins leadership abilities and his magnetic personality were two
of the most important mechanisms of his oppression. Stalin was able to effect great changes in Russia because he was not reluctant to resort to questionable tactics to do
so. His guile, cunning, and ruthlessness have few equals in world history! History recognizes Stalin as achieving impressive goals for
Russia. The transformation that Stalin effected in Russia was not without its costs, of course. Stalins ruthlessness in enacting his economic plans was perhaps a reflection of a
trait recognized much earlier in his career, a trait recognized by Vladamir Lenin himself, the founder of Russias Communist Party. Lenins visions for Russias future were, of course, significantly
different than Stalins. He too, however, achieved his power because of his admirable political skills and personality. Lenin was distinct from Stalin as well in regard to many
of his traits and visions as well as in the measures that he took to achieve power. Lenin gained power in
Russia as a result of the 1917 Russian Revolution which took place between March and September of 1917. As with all revolutions, years of discontent preceded the Russian
