novella, "Conrad laid bare a European supremacist attitude to "inferior races" that imbues our culture and is part of our colonial heritage" (Gunnnell). This work is chosen for closer examination
because of the rich language and the imbedded ideas that are layered in its text. Though is easy to simply wallow in its thick
and telling prose and watch all the themes and issues bubble to the surface. One such issue that is surfaced is sexism. "For some critics, the work is anti- feminist,
and both Marlow and Conrad are guilty of sexism" (Bergenholtz). As politically correct as that may be, the focus chosen for this paper, is the symbolism of nature and character
found in the first two pages of the novella. "Those lines from Heart of Darkness - "The horror! The horror" (Kreilkamp) are one
of the most famous lines in literature. In this work, Conrad does not give his words one job to do, however. He is said to have labored for days
on just one sentence. With the economy of that Conrad uses, special care should be given all his words and what may lay beneath them.
It is no surprise that Conrad was a critic of British colonialism in Africa. This was not a bitter disregard for the whole country however. He loved England
and forsake his Polish citizenship to become a British subject. He too had a romantic view of the "White Mans Burden and as a boy dreamed of going to the
