of dramatic change in the art world, and Schmidt, as a member of Bauhaus, was at its epicenter. For example, in the field of typography, in which Schmidt was extremely
influential, prior to Bauhaus, type was ornate and sans serif fonts did not exist. The clean, crisp lines of modern type, which are taken for granted today, were radical innovations
when they were first introduced in the early part of the twentieth century. To appreciate how this came about and the role that Schmidt played, it is first necessary
to see the Bauhaus in the context of its time. The Bauhaus was founded in 1919 by architect Walter Gropius, who came
from the Werkbund movement, which endeavored to integrate art and economics, as well as adding an element of engineering to art (Flores, 2002). The Werkbund movement failed at integrating these
elements, but, with the founding of the Bauhaus, Gropius saw a solution that had been previously overlooked (Flores, 2002). By combining the Weimar Art Academy with the Weimar Arts and
Crafts School (renamed the Bauhaus), students at the new school had the opportunity to receive training from both master craftsmen, as well as from master artists. This realized the
desire of Gropius to make "modern artists familiar with science and economics," which he felt would "unite creative imagination with a practical knowledge of craftsmanship," leading the way to
the development of a "new sense of functional design" (Flores, 2002). The ideology of the school was predicated on three aims that remained basically unchanged throughout the life span
