The philosophy of transcendentalism asserts that it is possible
to discover truth through the medium of intuition, as opposed to academic knowledge, and that such truth is peculiar to the individual. Those who followed this philosophy, such as Emerson
and Thoreau, were such discrete individuals that it is difficult to group them together; transcendentalism is essentially concerned with individual development, individual thought, and the way in which one can
access truth through ones intuitive understanding of the natural world.
It did not exclude the material concerns of the world: Thoreau, for instance, was quite prepared to undertake paid work and
to play his part in society as a whole. However, he also maintained that the only way in which human beings could discover the truth about the world was through
their interaction with nature, and their understanding of the important and basic principles of life rather than the superficial and materialistic pursuits which occupied the majority of human beings.
