strategic tool, often as a entry method to overcome barriers to entry and to increase their level of competitiveness, in the past this may have been with the aim of
avoiding obsolescence. In more recent times the push factors has been the increased need for knowledge and the advantages of collective action and the need to gain operate in a
more cost effective manner. Associated with these advantages are the risk, such as information leak, even where one companies contribution is protected by tools such as partners an copyrights. In
many instances joint ventures may increase the stability of operations, however, in the international arena there is also the phenomenon of dormant instability. In many international joint ventures a motivation
for the formation of the joint venture is complimentary knowledge such as knowledge of the local markets. Where the transfer of knowledge may empower on of the partners, but that
partner chooses not to act. The rate of instability in international joint ventures has been estimated at anything between 25% and 75%, the higher percentages seen in the more turbulent
developing economies. Despite this the popularity of joint ventures and strategic alliances has been increasing, many lasting for long periods of time. The past research has had a focus
on the inception rather than the ongoing influential forces. The initial problems such as inception and conception as well as set up are well documented but the study of how
