The owner of a group practice of three dentists and two hygienists has been approached by a managed care company, US DentalCare, to participate in its plan. The
plan makes reimbursement on a capitated basis, meaning that the practice receives a nominal payment for each of the individuals covered under the plan, whether or not they make use
of the practices services. It is left to the owner to evaluate the potential of such a plan for the purpose of deciding whether to enter into the arrangement
with the managed care company. Current Business Results At present, the practice sees an average of 38 patients daily who fall into the
age range of 20 to 50, the ages for which the US DentalCare representative offers payment. Whether US DentalCare does not enroll those younger or older is not made
clear in the case; neither is it clear what those outside age groups add to the practice in its current form. The owner
