History of the atoll Johnston Atoll (also known as Johnston Island) is a "low sand and coral island," which is located roughly 717 miles southwest of Honolulu, Hawaii (Johnston Island History). It is only 1,000 yard long and roughly 200 yards wide, with the highest point on the island reaching 44 feet (Johnston Island History). It is a naturally barren environment with vegetation consisting of three species of herb (Johnston Island History). The American brig Sally, out of Boston and commanded by Joseph Pierpont, grounded on a shoal off Johnston Atoll on September 2, 1796, but the captain gave no name to this newly discovered land at that time (Johnston Island History). Therefore, the credit for the discovery goes to H.B.M.S. Cornwallis which landed on December 14, 1807 and the atoll is named for that ships commanding officer, Captain Charles J. Johnston (Johnston Island History). The captain of an American schooner Palestine took official possession of Johnston and the surrounding islands in the name of the United States on March 19, 1858 (Johnston Island History). Three months later, the Hawaiian schooner Kalama visited Johnston. The American flag was removed and the Hawaiian flag was hoisted (Johnston Island History). The Hawaiians renamed the island Kalama Island (Johnston Island History).
