to examine and evaluate the validity of the case presented by evolutionary biologists that regarding the theory of evolution, doing so with an open mind and an objective perspective. In
other words, Johnsons book considers whether there is convincing evidence that the immense diversity of life that exists on came about, as Darwin asserts, simply from the processes of natural
selection. Johnson begins by describing the US Supreme Court case that addressed the Louisiana law that required instruction in creation science and the ruling that held the law unconstitutional.
In providing background information for understanding this 1981 case, Johnson explains the various positions and jargon associated with the debate on evolution, which includes the details of the famous Scopes
case from the 1920s. This distinguishes the difference the "young earth" position the world was created in six, twenty-four hour days no more than 10,000 years ago and the "creation
by design" position that creation did occur over millennia but that it was directed by a Creator (Johnson 21). The text asserts that "creation contradicts evolution only when it means
sudden creation, rather than creation by progressive development" (Johnson 22). In this introductory chapter, Johnson presents a balanced and fair assessment of the debate, which includes the argument that
the Constitution permits "the legislature to give people offended by the allegedly dogmatic teaching of evolution a fair opportunity to reply" (Johnson 25). Essentially, Johnsons book constitutes such a reply
