an elderly silversmith, to whom Johnny is apprenticed. The apparent heir to his masters shop, Johnny bosses the other apprentices. "Dove...hated the way the younger apprentice (Johnny) lorded it over him, telling him when to go to bed, when to get up, criticizing his work in the silversmiths shop as though he were already a master smith" (Forbes 3). As this suggests, Johnny allows self pride and arrogance to rule his behavior. He is impetuous and rash. In short, a typical immature adolescent. However, over the course of the narrative, he is, first of all, taken down a peg or two by an accident that disfigures his hand and ends any possibility of a career as a silversmith. He is brought into contact with Rab Silsbee, a sixteen year old who possesses all of the mature qualities that Johnny lacks. He becomes Johnnys role model. He also learns from the prominent political leaders of Boston and he absorbs new ideas from reading. This factors combine to change Johnny from immature and self-centered adolescent into a selfless, idealistic and patriotic man. As this suggests, the main theme of the novel is the psychological development over a pivotal two year period in Johnnys life. Johnnys maturation process parallels the maturation of the American colonies as they journey toward war and independence. The thematic context demonstrates how it is experience that propels adolescents toward mature adulthood and that war naturally speeds up this process. Rab, for example, is remarkably mature for a sixteen-year-old, and his maturity is reasonable and logical when the reader realizes that he has been involved in revolutionary politics for several years when Johnny meets him.
