as well as the common believer. The Gospels essentially all tell us similar, yet different stories, with Johns story serving as a foundation of the synoptic Gospels. In the synoptic
Gospels we see the story of John as well as the story of Jesus. But, in Johns we see the focus on illustrating the supreme nature of Jesus. In John
3: 1-21 we see a conversation with a man called Nicodemus, a man who is a religious leader of his people. In this segment Jesus tells him about God and
about being reborn. While none of the synoptic Gospels discuss this conversation there are elements in the other Gospels which touch on the teachings of Jesus as presented by John.
Bearing that in mind the following paper first examines Johns words in 3: 1-21 and then presents Chapter 5 of the Gospel of Matthew, examining how Matthews words and descriptions,
though different at times, do not argue against the words of John. John In better understanding the chapter and verses which will be discussed it is perhaps important to
know something of John himself. And, in knowing something of John we find it important to understand how concrete his ideas and his beliefs were. Morris indicates that from the
very beginning of the Gospel of John we see how John believes that Jesus place was irrefutable. He introduces us to this conditions when he speaks of the Word of
God, indicating that the Word is God. This helps us to understand the solid foundation of the belief of John as it concerns Jesus as the Son of God and
