At the age of nineteen, it is hard to tell. A notable story, that focuses on a quite simple and shy nineteen year old is John Updikes "A&P." Perhaps the greatest accomplishment in this piece is the characterization of the narrator, Sammy. Sammy is also the protagonist, and the reader is immediately drawn into his uneventful world. It is the world of a nineteen year old boy, but unlike those teens who lead fast, dangerous lives, the only interesting aspect in this world is that Sammy is an underachiever. In some way, that point becomes important. Sammy works at the A&P and while others of a higher intelligence or of a higher class are out working and making more money, or out waxing their hot rods, or finding girls, Sammy is in a rut. He lacks the know how or the ambition to do anything more. Sammy is the Tony Manero--of 1977 film Saturday Night Fever fame--of the sixties, except he is in Massachusetts instead of New York. The Updike tale takes place during the early sixties at the start of the sexual revolution, which is a revolution that seems to continue. With looser mores, the A&P policy is set. No bathing suited customers are allowed. When three teenage girls, to whom Sammy is attracted, enter the A&P, there is a problem. The manager berates them, and they are seemingly embarrassed. Sammy of course does not know them, except in his own fantasy, but takes a stand and quits his job in protest of the policy. The girls are in trouble because they are wearing bathing suits and that is clearly against the stores policy.
