SA125lie.rtf When Pinocchios nose grew, everyone knew that he had told a lie. Yet, in the real world, people lie all the time and no one is the wiser. Noses stay the same, and although mannerisms-and of course a polygraph-can give away an untruth, lying is a way of life. White lies are told to preserve friendships, and big lies are told to preserve marriages. People are lied to by their leaders to preserve national security, but is all the lying for the grater good of society, or is it a bad thing to do? Some might argue that lying is wrong in any circumstance, but it does seem that lying is necessary, it serves the greater good of society and finally, it is simply a realty of life. It must be accepted for what it is, and applauded for what it can do-mend a friendship, save a life, make someone feel good, protect a country-and so lying under some circumstances is positive. John Stuart Mill abhorred the lie, but saw that it was necessary in some circumstances. It may be argued that lying is not only necessary in some circumstances, but one may go beyond the few exceptions and see good in the lie. It is certainly a premise consistent with utilitarianism. Near the end of chapter two of Mills Utilitarianism, he argues that people ought not to lie. But he also goes on to say that there must be exceptions to the general rule against lying.
