view and states: "His peculiar brand of utilitarianism--a cake of Benthamite hedonism glazed with Wordsworthian sentimentality--accounts for part of Mills appeal: it provides a perfect recipe for embellishing programmatic shallowness
with a patina of spirituality and elevated "feeling" " (p.4). In some way, Mills flowery rhetoric and simplicity of thought makes his writing read like a self-help book. It also,
if viewed in a certain context, alleviates one of guilt for their transgressions. Indeed, the focus on individuality and individual choice can create a situation where an individual does feel
a certain sense of entitlement and Mill can be construed as giving someone a pass to do what he or she likes. Of course, if taken that way, people are
missing the point. In Utilitarianism and in On Liberty, Mill conveys a thesis that goes to looking within for morality, but not ignoring the rights of others. It is a
balance and one could say that if John Stuart Mill were alive today he would be a libertarian. Mills work is contradictory, which is why he is so controversial.
One can take the meaning of Mills writings to suggest that individuality rules and so utility is meaningless, but of course, Mill is a utilitarian and so his theory goes
to something that is not quite as simple as many would imagine. His essays are beautifully written with a sense of simplicity, but there is a dual nature that is
