examines these people, these characters in Steinbecks novel, analyzing how Steinbeck makes them come alive through his writing style and use of language. Tortilla Flat The story itself
is, perhaps by todays standards, a very dysfunctional story about a group of young men, friends, who always seem drunk and end up losing anything they may have had. They
are, again by todays standards, useless losers in a society that expects one to work and get ahead. They are, however, above all, friends and people who are not immersed
in material possessions as they seek happiness and simplicity in life. In the hands of any other writer these characters would surely appear as losers. One of the characters,
the main character, is Danny who is a young man that has just returned from WWI. He has possession of two homes and desires to set up in this little
impoverished town and have a life. As one critic indicates: "Danny is the leader of the paisanos of Tortilla Flat...He is King Arthur to the Knights of the Round Table
that Steinbeck models the paisanos after. This status came to Danny quite randomly...Though everyone in the group shares everything they have, the fact that Danny shares his houses elevates him
to this position" (Sparknotes). This allows us to see the honorable or humble nature of the characters in many ways, attributes that make them come alive with their interactions
