of the environment. John Steinbeck, born here just after the turn of the century, grew up during a time that saw the struggle for fair labor practices in large-scale agriculture
that depended on a migrant labor force for its economic stability. As commercial growers increasingly took over more and more of the land, family farmers were squeezed out, and the
demand for cheap, seasonal labor increased. It is generally agreed that the most significant biographical link between Steinbeck and his writings is this fact of his birth and growth to
maturity in the Salinas Valley (Monarch Notes 1). Steinbeck carefully observed the labor difficulties. He himself worked as a laborer on a ranch during his college years, an experience that
brought him into direct contact with migrant workers, many of whom were foreign nationals. His acquaintance with this diverse labor force exposed Steinbeck to a wide variety of dialects, customs
and characters, all of which became the material he later drew upon for his fiction. Steinbecks own experiences, combined with his firsthand observations of the struggles of others, came together
in his imagination as an "experimental novel, written like a play" (Hadella 5), dramatizing the working people and their striving to become independent landowners. This, of course, was the beginning
of the formation of Of Mice and Men, Steinbecks classic novel focusing on the dream of owning land. As a youth, Steinbeck was a voracious reader, probably due to the
