during a time in American history when many people struggled. His short story "Chrysantemums" is a story that still "remains a popular selection in literary anthology textbooks" for its intricate
characterizations and thematic content (Literary Encyclopedia). The following paper examines the character of the traveling salesman in Steinbecks story. The Traveling Salesman The traveling salesman is an individual
who is, if we are to believe his words, a man who has lost his way and is trying to get back on track. He is a poor fellow who
meanders his way up and down California mending pots and sharpening blades. He travels the road in his wagon that is pulled by his horse and mule. He lives a
very simple life, and is also a man seeking some assistance from the woman in the story, for as mentioned, he is off his regular path and could use some
work, or perhaps food. There are moments when we see that this man is hungry, that he needs more than he is asking for, but yet he will not
ask outright for anything, but instead would rather work to make his living. He tells Elisa, in relationship to looking at the beauty of the stars at night, "Its nice,
just like you say. Only when you dont have no dinner, it aint" (Steinbeck). He never says he would love some food or a meal or anything, but rather asks
if she has anything he can fix. In this we see he is likely an honorable man living a very simple life. In addition, in this we see his
objective and motive is to make a living and simply survive. He is proud of his work, or at least he presents himself that way for as a salesman he
