promise, for those who are wealthy or highly educated. Steinbecks characters always seem to imagine the American Dream but they are average people from lower classes, and they are never
able to obtain that American Dream because of their social position. Steinbeck addressed the Great Depression and such events as the disastrous Dust Bowl in examination of such real people.
In the following paper we examine some of the works of John Steinbeck, illustrating how the characters never achieve the American Dream they were promised was a possibility.
The American Dream One of the most powerful works of Steinbeck is one which details the Dust Bowl. The book is titled "The Grapes of Wrath." The family that we
witness in Steinbecks novel is the Joad family. They are the heart of the nation and people of this country as they lose their ability to make a living and
set off to search for a way to survive, as well as a way to obtain the American Dream. They were a people, a family, that illustrated how "The movement
of people on the Plains was...profound" (Anonymous The Dust Bowl, 2002; dust.html). Steinbeck (1939) illustrates this, not only through the Joad family, but through the general movement, stating, "And then
the dispossessed were drawn west- from Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico; from Nevada and Arkansas, families, tribes, dusted out, tractored out. Car-loads, caravans, homeless and hungry; twenty thousand and fifty
thousand and a hundred thousand and two hundred thousand" (p. NA). He illustrates how the Joads, and others, "streamed over the mountains, hungry and restless - restless as ants, scurrying
to find work to do - to lift, to push, to pull, to pick, to cut - anything, any burden to bear, for food. The kids are hungry" as the
