essay Americans and the Land is an essay about how Americans have, since they first arrived in the new land, abused and destroyed much of the land they encountered. Steinbeck
illustrates how Americans have little or no regard for the natural beauty that surrounds them and they only desire to conquer and destroy what they find. The following paper argues
against Steinbecks claims. John Steinbeck: Americans and the Land When one speaks of Americans there must be an understanding that not every American is the same, nor have
they ever been. There have always been people who would wish to take all they can, destroy all they can, and ultimately seek power and control over everything they can.
Unfortunately these are the sort of people who often have control and power and as such they are what most people equate with America and Americans. But, there is a
vast majority of individuals, throughout history, that have no desire to destroy and only desire to live and thrive, in harmony with what exits around them. In fact, Steinbeck was
one of these individuals and he was American. Steinbeck notes how people "cut and burned the forests to make room for crops; they abandoned their knowledge of kindness to
