of being "Americas first great artist" (May, 1998, p. 26). The year of Copleys departure was 1774, and with tensions escalating between the British and the colonists, war seemed
imminent. Copley, in essence, had two careers that stretched across the Atlantic. He was a self-trained artist who absorbed many different styles in order to develop his own
technical precision. In fact, it was at the urging of fellow painter Benjamin West that encouraged Copley to relocate to Europe and "study the old masters" (Parker, 1938, p.
11). However, it was his experiences in America that shaped his artistic vision, which ultimately manifested themselves in works he produced while living in England, which were considerably less
rigid than his occasionally stiff early American portraits. These paintings were, like Copley himself, free to explore the subject matter, while at the same time honing skills that could
be precise and expressive. There is an added complex dimension, as Copleys "brushwork is more varied, from thickly stroked passages to transparent glazes" (An American Artists British Masterpieces, 1996,
p. 36). Copleys oil portrait, "Charles, Lord Western, and Shirley Western," was believed to be commissioned by the Callis family in 1783, and represents his coming of age as a
painter, with the Anglo influence evident in the works "polish and refinement" (Parker, 1938, p. 12). This painting is featured on the Peter Western website, with the URL of
